Does it rain on the Sun? The answer to this is yes, however, it is not water that falls but very hot plasma. On July 19, 2012, there was an eruption on the Sun that produced a massive burst of solar wind and magnetic fields and released into Space. This eruption also produced a powerful solar flare. After that, a phenomenon known as coronal rain occurred. Corona Rain occurs occurs when hot plasma in the corona cools and condenses in strong magnetic fields, usually associated with regions that produce solar flares. The plasma condenses and slowly falls back to the solar surface.


The electrons, protons and ions in the rain is forced to move along the magnetic loops of the Sun’s surface. As a result, this bright flare highlights matter glowing at a temperature of about 50,000 Kelvin. The entire coronal rain lasted about 10 hours.

  1. The sun is heated by nuclear fusion. Our sun is fusing hydrogen into helium. That process creates a tremendous amount of heat.

  7. Amazing, isn’t it? The particles are flowing around magnetic loops (invisible) and following the paths of those loops. When one of the loops snaps and breaks, that’s then the particles escape, and when they hit our Earth’s atmospheres at the poles, that’s what the northern lights and southern lights are!

  15. That’s a really good point! I didn’t want to confuse you, but you’re right – the way it was presented is very confusing!

    The “song of the sun” are actually low frequency radio waves (which are electromagnetic waves like light, not sound waves even though they are called “radio waves”) that have been adjusted so you can hear them. The surface of the sun is made by the gases that make up the sun rolling and moving around like a pot of water boils, which means that the light from the sun changes just a little bit as the sun’s surface bubbles up and down. Scientists measure this effect and translate it into something you can hear. So it’s still light, not sound, that travels from the sun to the Earth. 🙂 You can read more about it here.

    You posted a picture of the song of the sun, how can you hear the song, because of the lack of oxygen in space, isn’t any sound, is there? and vibrations can’t travel can they? Is this right? This is what I was taught at school, but I got quite confused when they were talking about it an so I was listening probably an so I may have confused some of the information. Thanks for your help in advance 🙂
