Your voice is a vibration, and you can feel it when you place a hand on your throat when you speak. As long as there are molecules around, sound will be traveling though them by smacking into each other.
That’s why if you put an alarm clock inside a glass jar and remove the air, there’s no sound from the clock. There’s nothing to transfer the vibrational energy to – nothing to smack into to transfer the sound. It’s like trying to grab hold of fog – there’s nothing to hold on to.

Tried with three popsicle sticks still no sound, getting real good at blowing though. The is fascinated by it and comes.
The harmona is still not working. We remade it from the begining.
On the bright side made a variable sound shoebox guitar . that you talked about in top of buzzing hornets. it changes sound when you move the pencils. It is fun.
You do need the rubber bands in order to get a sound. Make sure they are stretched to have just a bit of tension, and are not touching anything other than at the endpoints. Keep me posted!
I tried a wider rubber band and loosening the bands on the ends even taking them off and I wasn’t able to get sound
