This experiment is for advanced students.

ACID!!! The word causes fear to creep in and get our attention.

BASIC!!! The word causes nothing to stir in most of us.

The truth is, a strong acid (pH 0-1) is dangerous, but a strong basic (pH 13-14) is just as dangerous. In this lab, we will get comfortable with the basics of bases and the acidity of acids along with how you can use both and tell the difference between them.

  1. It’s a calcium hydroxide solution that only adults or HS students should mix up according to the directions for this experiment on the website. It’s caustic (dangerous) to work with.

  2. Mari Pedersen says:

    Where can we get Limewater?

  3. It’s the basis for some of the advanced experiments. If you request special access for a particular grade, you’ll get access to experiments (even advanced ones) in that grade.

  4. Tracy Turissini says:

I am not quite sure why this is listed under the 2nd grade Chemistry experiments when it has the note under it that it is grade 9-12 content anyhow and we would need to upgrade to view it. That doesn’t make much sense.
