Week 18: Civil Engineering: Tension & Compression

This week we will take a look at the fundamental concepts in physics: forces! Investigate bridges, structures, learn about tension and compression, and build your own truss bridge out of simple materials!

Week 19: Civil Engineering: Materials, Structures, Buildings

This week we will take a look at building materials like steel, concrete, wood and aluminum as well as environmental forces that civil engineers need to account for when designing and building their constructions.

Week 20: Special Class! National Engineering Week: Design Part 1

Once a year, engineers and scientists all over the world go out into the community to inspire and educate the public about engineering, showing them how exciting it can be! When I was a university instructor, one of the hardest things to teach was design, innovation and creativity. One of the best ways to do this is by using the elements from Odyssey of the Mind activities from the late 1970s. I am putting together a special set of engineering design challenges that use simple materials that your kids can do right away.  Enjoy and have fun!

Week 21: Special Class! National Engineering Week: Design Part 2

We'll go over all the details in class to help get you started with your engineering design project. These projects review the major concepts in physics and apply them to the field of engineering by challenging students to design, build and test solutions using simple materials.
